  Secret Santa Anxiety is a ‘Thing’ the annual Christmas  whip-round is causing more than it’s  fair share of strain on one particular section of the workforce those who belong to the post-Generation X  known as the ‘Millenials’

According to  the leading  Recruiters;  Jobsite who have become part of the UK’s largest hiring platform whose research has shown the extent of the imbalance  where  a quarter of the younger members of the office have to go beyond their means to pay their part

  • The financial strain of contributing to activities such as ‘Secret Santa’ and presents for birthdays and promotions has led 26% of young workers to dip into savings and/or overdrafts to contribute.
  • The average millennial’s whip-round is 34% more expensive, with their average contribution reaching £9 (and a total of £151 per year, compared to £7 / £99 per year for all workers).
  • 17% of Millennials have felt judged by colleagues in relation to their contributions.
  • Jobsite report reveals that almost three quarters (73%) of workers aged between 23-38 have contributed more than they could afford to an office celebration.
  • Experts call for company budgets to help de-pressurise the likes of Christmas gifts and their amounts.

    Good for Morale?

    However, despite the financial and emotional pressures – The likes of ‘Secret Santa’ are here to stay, as the majority (61%) of UK office workers think they are good for morale, 60% believe they help build a healthy rapport amongst colleagues and a further 64% assert that gifting between employees is a sign of respect and appreciation.

They also point out the sense of resentment felt by the Millenials at not only  the lack of concern in considering their financial situation and being ‘called out‘ at their perceived stinginess bringing a sense of shame

Worth a read and careful consideration by all office managers and those in charge of organising the Christmas fundraising  a little more empathy is needed 

World record Attempt for largest display of illuminated Christmas trees

According to the Guiness World Records,The Hallmark  Channel has the exisiting World Record of 559 illuminated Christmas Trees displayed in Manhattan’s Herald’s Square in New York in 2015

 And an attempt to beat this 4 year old record in 2019  is by the City of Adrian in Michagan 49221 USA
