With December now upon us, bear a thought for just how busy Santa Claus will be on the night of Christmas Eve, and in the early hours of Christmas Day.
Every year he faces a logistics puzzle – how to deliver all the presents to all the children around the world who celebrate Christmas.
A study from a few years ago puts some figures on just how frantic his night is. Researchers at the University of Leicester calculated that there are some 715 million Christian boys and girls across the globe.
They then assumed an average of three children per household, which means that Father Christmas has to deliver to 238 million homes. This, in turn, requires Rudolf and the other reindeer to pull Santa’s sleigh at half the speed of light. That’s 336 billion mph (540 billion km/ph).
While Father Christmas is no doubt continuing his final preparations and limbering up, Christmas is, of course, also the busiest time of the year for retailers – none of us can sadly rely solely upon presents that are magically delivered via our chimneys.
The behemoth in the industry is Amazon, which throughout last year delivered 4.2 billion parcels in the US alone.

The British pop stars teamed up for to write a handful of holiday-themed songs, the first of which, “Merry Christmas,” dropped last Friday (Dec. 3).
At the earliest phase in the chart cycle, “Merry Christmas” is riding high. According to the OCC, the song has accumulated more than double the chart sales of its closest competitor, Adele’s reigning champ, “Easy On Me.”
No less than 14 Christmas songs are currently placed inside the Top 20, including George Ezra’s “Come On Home For Christmas,” vaulting 36-5, ahead of The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl’s “Fairytale Of New York” (16-6), Shakin’ Stevens’ “Merry Christmas Everyone” (17-7), Michael Buble’s “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” (20-8) and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” (22-9).

Wrapping gifts can seem like a chore to even the most festive of elves. For me, it’s more like a passion project. This is doubly true ever since I discovered eco-conscious and uber-cute designs from Wrappily. A lot of work goes into wrapping gifts in fancy paper that people are just going to rip off anyway. Wrapping gifts is an essential part of celebrating Christmas. There’s nothing more special than coming down on Christmas morning and finding a bunch of presents under the tree. Unfortunately, getting those gifts all nicely wrapped can be a lot more work than people realize. Thankfully, social media users are sharing their various gift wrapping hacks online. Whether they involve secret techniques for oddly shaped gifts or showing off unique gadgets that help make the process easier, these tips will help make the holidays a lot less stressful. Lindsay Roggenbuck shared a video on her page that shows how to wrap an oddly shaped gift. Instead of trying to fit the paper around a stuffed animal, she instead folds the wrapping paper into a small bag. Then she simply puts the toy in the bag and tapes the top shut.
Neatly wrapping a tube-shaped gift can also give a lot of people trouble. Lennia, the “folding queen,” showed a trick for making the ends look nice and neat. After cutting the paper to size with the tube, she then cuts the ends into tabs. Then she just presses each individual tab down once the paper is wrapped around the tube, giving it a nice clean edge. The TikTok page Make Life Simpler showed off a method for folding paper in a way that doesn’t require any tape. This is a good skill to learn because everyone’s had that moment where they run out of tape halfway through wrapping gifts.
